The District Attorney's Environmental Protection Unit prosecutes violations of the state's and the county's environmental protection laws. Through lawsuits which can levy heavy monetary penalties and through criminal actions that can result in jail sentences, the Environmental Protection Unit strives to uphold California's laws which protect the environment, and the health and safety of all of its citizens. The following are examples of cases recently resolved: Napa Chrysler Penalized for Failing to Properly Dispose of Used Oil: On 4/23/01, the Napa County District Attorney's Office obtained a Twenty Four Thousand Dollar stipulated judgment in a case brought against NAPA CHRYSLER, INC., and its corporate president, PATRICK SMORRA. The case arose out of allegations that Smorra and Napa Chrysler were illegally disposing of used motor oil. The judgment orders Smorra and Napa Chrysler not to violated California laws pertaining to hazardous waste disposal, used motor oil disposal, and hazardous waste storage and handling. (People v. Napa Chrysler, Inc., et. al., Napa Superior Court No. 26-13224).
