Search and Rescue

Search and RescueThe Napa County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit provides search and rescue services to all areas of the county. The unit’s mission is to locate and rescue victims in urban areas or wild lands, aircraft and boating accidents, and in natural or manmade disasters. The team is always mission ready and available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

The Search and Rescue Unit has a current authorized strength of 30 members, and is augmented by the members of the Sheriff’s Aero Squadron, Marine Patrol, and Mounted Posse. Members of the unit serve on a voluntary basis. All of these volunteers devote countless hours of their time in service of their community. The group is highly dedicated, proven by experience, and motivated by their desire to help others. In 2007, an Explorer Scout Post was added to the team and it has proved to be a great asset.

All members of the unit go through extensive training in the search and rescue function when they join the unit. Continuous in-service training is provided with mandatory attendance required of all members. All members are required to complete a first-aid course. Some members are emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

The Search and Rescue unit is available for wild land and urban searches to any agency in the county. The unit also will provide limited assistance for crime scene searches. Because of the time and training constraints we request that crime scene searches be limited to the most serious cases. The Search and rescue unit also has responsibilities to furnish search teams to other counties throughout the state as required by the California Master Mutual Aid Agreement to which Napa County is a signatory.
